Refund and Returns Policy
Last updated: August 22, 2026
A return here is an errand, not an argument. Below is what to do, step by step, and what happens on our side at each one. Figures match the Shipping Policy and the FAQ. The process is one we actually operate: email goes to a person, and the authorization comes back the same or next business day.
Take 30 days from the day it lands
Thirty days, counted from arrival rather than from checkout. USPS records that date and we use theirs. Begin the return inside those 30 days, then you have a further 14 days to get the parcel into the mail.
Ask us first — every return starts with an email
Send your order number and a sentence about the problem to contact@bookzastore.com, or use the form on the Contact page. Back comes an authorization plus the address, inside one business day. The question about what went wrong is not a hurdle. Some faults are ours to pay for, and a run of crushed mailers or mismatched titles tells us something about a distributor that we would never learn otherwise.
Keep it in the shape it arrived
Unread or lightly read, with jacket, spine, shrink wrap, poster, sticker sheet or marker set still present. Highlighting, notes in the margin, water damage or a spine cracked flat put a copy beyond resale. If that is what reaches us, we will say so directly rather than issue a quiet part-refund.
Check the short list we cannot take back
Three cases only: damage that happened after delivery rather than in transit; a parcel with no authorization, which cannot be tied to any order; and anything postmarked after the 30 days close. Gift cards, downloads and final-sale items appear nowhere on this page because we do not sell them.
Send it to Indianola, and nowhere else
Authorized returns come to 1007 W 3rd Ave Apt 118, Indianola, IA 50125 — the address printed on every page here. Never mail a book to the distributor named on the shipping label, even though the parcel started there. Never post one before the authorization exists. A parcel landing at a distribution center under our name matches nothing in any system, and that one mistake strands more refunds than every other cause put together.
See who pays the postage
Our fault, our cost. Damaged in transit, wrong title, or a copy that does not match its listing: a prepaid USPS label arrives by email and you spend nothing. Changed your mind, or picked the wrong book: the return postage is yours, and the original shipping charge, if there was one, stays spent. Media Mail keeps that cheap for books, and we will point you to it.
Pay no restocking fee, ever
Zero, in every case. No handling deduction either. The price of the book comes back whole.
Report a damaged book within 7 days, with photos
Photograph the damage and the mailer, then email both with the order number inside 7 days of delivery. Hold on to the book for now; the photos usually settle it. You choose a replacement copy or a full refund, at no cost either way, and a battered mailer becomes our claim with the carrier rather than your problem. Printing faults count too — pages bound out of sequence, a missing signature, ink dragged across a block of text — and those carry no 7-day limit, because nobody spots them until they read that far.
Tell us if the wrong title turned up
Send the order number and the title actually in the box. A prepaid label covers the wrong copy going back, and the right one goes out. If the title you wanted has gone out of stock in the meantime, the refund is full and includes shipping. Nobody pays twice while two parcels pass each other.
Tell us if it is not the book the page described
Different problem from the one above, and the one we take hardest. Hardcover promised and paperback delivered; an edition, printing, page count, language or age range that does not match the listing — those are listing errors, and listing errors belong to us. Email inside the 30 days: we cover the postage and refund in full, or source the correct edition if it can still be had. Publishers refresh jacket art between printings, so a cover shade that differs slightly from the photograph is normal and sits in the Disclaimer. A different edition does not.
Swap one title for another instead
Exchanges run as a return plus a separate order. It moves faster and both amounts stay visible to you. Send the first copy back under the rules above and buy the replacement whenever suits; waiting for the refund to clear is not required. Where the swap exists because we made the mistake, postage both directions is ours.
Cancel, redirect, or watch a parcel come back
Twelve hours from ordering to cancel or redirect, provided nothing has dispatched. Email the order number with the word "cancel" or the corrected address. After that the distributor has it, and the return route takes over on arrival. Parcels refused at the door, or bounced back as undeliverable through a bad ZIP, a missing apartment number or an unclaimed notice, are refunded for the books once they reach Indianola. The original shipping charge is not refunded there — that postage was genuinely used.
Expect the refund in 3 to 5 business days
Once the copy arrives and passes its check, the refund goes out inside 3 to 5 business days, back down whichever route paid — card or PayPal — with an email confirming it left. Your bank or PayPal then needs a further 3 to 10 business days to post it. That second stretch belongs to them; we cannot shorten it. Where a parcel never arrived at all, the trace in the Shipping Policy runs first, and the same 3 to 5 day timing starts once USPS confirms the loss.
Write to a person
When a return stops behaving the way this page says it will, tell us. Someone here reads every message that comes in.
